Carabiners: what are the types and where are they used?

The product we would like to introduce you to is a metal carabiner . Usually this is a fastener in the form of a curved rod with a latch that closes with a spring. The carbine got its name thanks to the weapon of the same name, the hunters hung it on exactly the same hook. Over time, the boundaries of the use of carbines have expanded. For example, in sports, industry, tourism and construction, these products are used as safety connections. Such fasteners are used when performing rigging and cargo work. The carabiner can even be found in the fashion industry, it is used as an accessory on clothes and bags.

We want to acquaint you with the existing types of carbines and their features.

Purpose and main types of carbines.

Carabiners are:

  • screw;
  • firefighters;
  • pipe;
  • rapids;
  • swivel.

A screw carabiner is used for instant connection of various types of chains, cables and other elements of fastening systems. Products of this type are used to connect a broken chain or as an additional link that is necessary to increase the length.

The fireman's carbine is used when performing construction and installation works. This tool is durable and durable. Industrial climbers and rescuers usually use a fire carbine when working at height.

Pipe fastening carabiners are used as insurance on scaffolding, and are also used as a mobile anchor point.

Rapid carabiners are used in high-altitude and industrial mountaineering, for safety purposes.

A carabiner with a swivel or rotating, a widespread option among fasteners. Most often, this type of carabiner is used during installation work, as well as for domestic purposes for fixing and quickly connecting two links of a belt or chain at low loads.

Carabiners are made from various materials, they are:

  • titanium;
  • aluminum;
  • steel.

Steel products are the most durable. Steel carabiners are used in rescue work, in industrial mountaineering, as well as in other areas where safety and reliability are a priority. It is this type of carabiners that is most often used in rigging and fastening systems.

Aluminum carabiners are most often used in sports. The strength of this carabiner is suitable for this type of activity. What can not be said about titanium carabiners, they, in turn, could not pass the “strength tests”, since at any moment at the point of critical stress they can begin to crumble, especially if there is internal damage from impact.

Another plus of the aluminum carabiner is the ability to remove heat that occurs when the carabiner is heated as a result of sliding. The titanium carabiner in this case does not withstand overheating.

The process of choosing a carbine is very interesting. The product is designed in such a way that it is convenient to use it with one hand. The load should be evenly distributed along the entire contour, bending around the area on which the lock is located.

The oval carabiner is simple in execution, but it cannot be used as a belay element. Do not use a latch carabiner in designs where half the load is on the latch side.

A trapezoid carabiner can be a wonderful option. The stronger side bears most of the load. The most durable are D-shaped carabiners, they are also called triangular.

Fasteners in the form of a pear are the most convenient to use. In terms of strength, it is similar to asymmetric products. There is also a type of carabiners with a curved latch inward. The strength characteristics of such a carbine are identical to the asymmetric class, but it is much more convenient to use them.
